Luserna San Giovanni

Luserna San Giovanni: a thousand-year history and exquisite flavours

The economic capital of the Val Pellice and a ‘garden city’, it is world-famous for its laminated stone and its industrial confectionery heritage.

The best of Luserna

  • Luserna Alta: a medieval village perched on a bastion. Places to see include Piazza del Canavero, the Loggia dei Mercanti (11th century) and the charming Via degli Orefici (Pascalot), once the castle’s moat.
  • San Giovanni and Liberty: the square of the two temples features the Baroque Catholic Church facing the Waldensian Temple (1807), the first to be built outside the historical boundaries imposed on the community.
  • The industrial heart: in Airali, water has powered the textile and confectionery industries for centuries, such as the historic Caffarel. The Luserna stone quarries lend the local villages an unmistakable silvery sheen.
