Macello

Macello

Described by De Amicis as a white island in a still green sea, Macello is a neat little village nestled amongst castles and rural heritage.

The best of Macello

  • The Castle: originally built in the 13th century as a fortress, it is surrounded by a botanical garden which was the first in Piedmont to be designed for the visually impaired. It houses an archive containing documents dating back to the 14th century.
  • Memories of hemp: the agricultural past lives on in the names of local areas such as ‘Battitori’ and in the remains of the old hemp retting pits.
  • Flavour and Innovation: beneath the municipal canopy in Piazza Roma, one can admire the artwork ‘Work, Humility, Prayer’. The village is home to culinary specialities such as the award-winning “Salam ‘d Giors” cured meats and organic fruit farming.
