Stop on the Strada delle Mele

Frossasco

Frossasco

Frossasco preserves the spirit of ancient Rome in its geometric layout and its four historic gates.

  • The medieval village: enclosed by 14th-century walls, the village retains the charm of the ‘ricetto’, with the San Giusto and Pinerolo gates still intact. In the main square, 15th-century buildings with Gothic windows stand out.
  • An open-air museum: along the streets you’ll find votive frescoes (including a rare Holy Shroud) and ancient sundials, such as the 11th-century one on the Church of San Donato.
  • Musical and climbing treasures: the Church of San Bernardino houses one of the oldest organs in the Pinerolo area (1400). Also worth noting is the Chapel of the Madonna del Boschetto, which can be visited using the ‘Cultura a Porte Aperte’ app. Higher up lies Casa Canada (Rifugio Melano), at the foot of the legendary Rocca Sbarua, a mecca for climbers.
